Do you have anemia caused by MDS?
You may be eligible to participate in a study to explore if different drugs may prevent or delay your need for red-blood cell (RBC) transfusions.

What is the purpose of this study?
Researchers are hoping to learn more about the differences in how the drug, luspatercept, may help to prevent or delay the need for red blood cell (RBC) transfusions when compared to epoetin alfa in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
Can I Participate?
This study is looking for patients who have been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with the following:
- Patients diagnosed with lower risk MDS (lower risk includes very low, low and intermediate risk).
- Patients who have current symptom(s) of anemia (this may include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, or dizziness).
- Patients who do not currently require regular red blood cell transfusions.
- Patients who have not been previously treated for MDS.
What will happen if I decide to participate?
- You will meet with an MDS doctor and care team to help determine if you may be eligible.
- You will be randomly assigned to receive either the investigational drug (luspatercept) or epoetin alfa.
- You may remain on this study for up to two years (or longer), as long as you continue to receive benefit from treatment.
- After treatment has stopped, you may be contacted by the study team for up to 5 years to follow your health.

What will it cost to participate?
You will not be paid to participate in this study. But you will NOT need to pay for:
- Study treatment,
- Study visits, or
- Study related tests
You may be responsible for other costs such as travel expenses or medical tests not related to the study. However, reasonable expenses for travel and meals taken during travel may be reimbursed after discussing this with the study team.

Frequently asked questions
The treatment being studied is luspatercept. If you choose to participate in the study, you will receive either luspatercept or epoetin alfa.
Luspatercept has recently become available for treatment of anemia in adults with lower risk MDS who may require blood transfusions. Epoetin alfa is commonly used for the treatment of anemia in transfusion and non-transfusion dependent adults with lower risk MDS. Luspatercept has not yet been approved for your condition.
